Linux Kernel in Real-Time

With the version 2.6.18 of the Linux kernel (Linus Torvalds had announced it on September 19th), basic real-time support is now standard in the vanilla kernel. This will ease the developement of embeddedLinux applications, whwhich no more needs external real-time patches. Much of the work was done by Thomas Gleixner at TimeSys and Ingo Molnar at Red Hat.

Ubuntu 6.06 'Dapper Drake' has been released. Ubuntu 6.06 offers 5 years of fixes/patches and the availability of global commercial support where needed. There is also a Linux Forum review.

Linux kernel 2.6.14 was released on 28 Oct. Among the new features we list HostAP, FUSE, the linux port of the plan9's 9P protocol, netlink connector, relayfs, securityfs, centrino's wireless drivers, support for DCCP (currently a RFC draft, PPTP, full 4 page-table support for ppc64, numa-aware slab allocator, lock-free descriptor lookup and more.

SUSE 10.0 OSS Released

Novell released OpenSuSE 10.0 for download. Product highlights include kernel 2.6.13, gcc 4.0.2, glibc 2.3.5, improved boot times and Xen 3. Torrents are available for the i386, ppc and x86_64 versions.

Novell has started a full-open branch of its Suse Linux. This move, while similar to the RedHat - Fedora affair, has its own rationale: "The openSUSE project aims to creates a stabilized, polished Linux distribution (SUSE Linux) that delivers everything a user needs to get started with Linux".

Mandriva acquires Lycoris

Mandriva, formerly known as Mandrakesoft, announced an agreement to purchase main assets from Lycoris, the popular Linux distribution aimed at novice users. As part of this agreement, Lycoris' founder and CEO Joseph Cheek is joining Mandriva to integrate the best features of Lycoris into Mandriva Linux, especially into the Discovery product aimed at new Linux users.

Fedora Core 4 is now available from Red Hat and at mirror sites, and is also available in the torrent. Fedora Core is available for x86-64, i386, and ppc/ppc64.

Knoppix 3.9 Released

The live-cd Linux distribution Knoppix has been updated to version 3.9. This is likely the last single-CD version of Knoppix before the split into Light and Maxi versions.

Debian 3.1 (Sarge) Released

The new Debian stable release, codenamed Sarge, has officially been released on Monday June 06. Changes include Gnome 2.8, Firefox 1.0.4, Thunderbird 1.0.2, Apache 2.0.54 (1.3.33 is still available), Postgresql 7.4.7, and more.
